The National Executive Committee of the South African Federation of Trade Unions met on the 13 March 2019 to amongst other things evaluate the readiness of the federation in relationship to the general strike or total shut down scheduled for the 26 and 27 March 2019.
The NEC assessed the amount of work in relation to the mobilisation, planning and holding a successful mass action and came to the view that the federation is not ready to proceed with the strike action/shut down due to organisational challenges.
These includes amongst others challenges faced by a number of affiliates unions and therefore the federation; the base has not been sufficiently mobilised and the working class formations as a whole have not sufficiently worked hard enough to ensure that the objectives of this strike / shut down are realised equal or more than the power demonstrated by workers on the 25th April 2018.
SAFTU believes an unequivocal message must be communicated to all sundry that the majority of the working class is not happy with the current levels of poverty, unemployment, inequalities, dysfunctional and two levels education and health system, homelessness, landlessness, property less, rates of crime, corruption, etc.
The Central Committee will be convened around May/June 2019 to decide on the new date for the general strike.
We call on the members to mobilise for the May Day celebrations. The main rally will be held in Limpopo province with other rallies held in KwaZulu Natal, Gauteng, Free State, Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
