The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the worker who lost a life due to an explosion that happened at Nova Feeds Factory in Malmesbury, Cape Town. We further wish a speedy recovery to the two hospitalised workers that were involved in the explosion.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requires employers to provide and maintain a reasonable and practical work environment that is safe and without risk to the health of employees. This unfortunate explosion that left workers injured and one dead should be investigated in line with the requirements of safety the employer was obligated to meet. The investigation will not only help ensure we ascertain the cause of the explosion but that we hold those responsible/irresponsible accountable.
SAFTU is in solidarity with FAWU which organizes workers in the factory and food and allied industries. The safety of the work environment must be guaranteed for workers to return to a safe working space.
