The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) is deeply saddened by the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of 11 primary school pupils and their driver in the Kokosi-Wedela area of Merafong City Local Municipality on Wednesday. The accident occurred when their scholar transport minibus collided with a white Ford Ranger bakkie, causing the vehicle to overturn and catch fire. Pupils from Rockland Primary School and Laerskool Blyvooruitsig were killed in the crash.
We urge motorists to always be vigilant and reduce speeds, especially during morning hours when transporting school children. Traffic can become congested, and many are rushing to work.
This tragic loss of lives highlights the critical importance of road safety. In addition to providing counselling to the educators at the affected schools, we call on the government to also provide counselling to the families of the victims and speed up the identification process, as the bodies were burnt beyond recognition. Offering solace to the grieving parents during this unbearable time is essential.
SAFTU extends deep condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost
their lives in this horrific accident.
