The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) is saddened to learn that an apartment building under construction in George, Western Cape, collapsed on workers. As confirmed by the latest media reports, the death toll has tragically risen to 7, with scores injured, and 39 still missing (probably buried under the rubble).
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and hope those missing will be found alive. Our hearts go out to those who have lost their lives, as well as those who are critically injured and undergoing treatment.
The dedicated rescue teams of workers continue their efforts tirelessly, and we commend their commitment in moments of disasters like this one.
SAFTU stands in solidarity with the affected workers and their families, and we urge a thorough investigation to determine the cause of this devastating incident. Should it be found that precautionary measures and warnings were ignored by employers and managers on site because of a rush to complete the building, such managers should be held accountable. Workers’ lives should not be sacrificed at the alter of productivity.
