The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) expresses its absolute disgust and unequivocal condemnation of the horrific attack on emergency medical services (EMS) workers in Makhaza, Khayelitsha. Reports indicate that seven criminals hijacked an ambulance and allegedly subjected one of the EMS staff members to sexual violence.
This barbaric act is an affront not only to the victims but to the entire working class and society at large. Our frontline workers, who risk their lives daily to save others, should never be subjected to such brutality. Instead of being protected and supported, they are increasingly falling victim to the very violence that plagues our communities.
SAFTU demands urgent and decisive action from law enforcement to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure swift justice. The government must also intensify efforts to protect EMS workers by implementing immediate safety measures, including police escorts in high-risk areas.
Furthermore, this crime is yet another symptom of a deeper societal crisis—one driven by poverty, unemployment, and the erosion of social cohesion due to the state’s neoliberal policies. The ANC-led Government of National Unity, which prioritizes profit over people, has failed to address the worsening crime and gender-based violence that continue to terrorize our communities.
We stand in full solidarity with the victims and their families. We also call on all workers, unions, and communities to unite against the scourge of gender-based violence and crime. Our fight for a just society is incomplete if our sisters and comrades cannot walk the streets or perform their duties without fear of assault.
SAFTU will not remain silent. We demand action, justice, and accountability—NOW!
A Statement was issued on behalf of SAFTU by General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.
