The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) condemns in the strongest possible terms the reckless and dangerous statement by US President Donald Trump, who has threatened that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” if Iran does not submit to his ultimatum. This is not diplomacy; this is not leadership; it is a direct threat to humanity.
The world knows that the individual making these threats commands the most powerful military machine in history, with nuclear weapons capable of annihilating millions. Such reckless rhetoric is not abstract; it represents a real and present danger to global peace.
REJECT THE LIES USED TO JUSTIFY WAR
SAFTU rejects with contempt the claim that the people of Iran are calling for more bombs and destruction. No people call for their own annihilation. No working class demands the bombing of their cities. This is a cynical and dangerous lie used repeatedly to manufacture consent for war.
A WORLD HELD HOSTAGE BY IMPERIAL POWER
These threats must be understood in the context of a global system in which powerful nations impose their will through military force, sanctions, and intimidation. Such conduct undermines international law, destabilises entire regions, and places humanity at the brink of catastrophic conflict. WORKERS WILL PAY THE PRICE As always, it is not those in power who suffer the consequences:
- Workers will face rising fuel and food prices
• The poor will bear the burden of displacement and insecurity
• Developing countries will absorb the shocks of global instability
War is not fought by the powerful; it is paid for by the working class.
SAFTU calls for:
• Immediate de-escalation and an end to all war threats
• Respect for international law and national sovereignty
• A negotiated political solution, not ultimatums backed by force
• Global mobilisation of workers and progressive forces against war
The reckless threats issued by Donald Trump represent a profound danger to global peace and human survival.
The working class of the world rejects:
• War
• Nuclear threats
• Imperial domination
We stand for peace, justice, and international solidarity.
