The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) expresses its outrage and deep concern following reports of the alleged rape of a 12-year-old child in Dobsonville, Soweto.
We note that Mr Tshepo Ntsimane, who is reported to be a pastor and political figure, has been arrested, charged, and has appeared in court in connection with these allegations.
This is an extremely serious matter. The alleged violation of a child constitutes one of the gravest crimes in our society and demands the full and uncompromising response of the justice system.
SAFTU condemns, in the strongest possible terms, all forms of sexual violence against children. If the allegations against the accused are proven in court, this would represent not only a heinous crime, but a profound abuse of positions of trust and authority.
We therefore call for:
• A thorough, impartial, and expedited investigation and prosecution
• No interference or intimidation in the legal process
• Maximum sentencing if the accused is convicted
• Immediate and long-term support for the child, including medical, psychological, and social services
• Protection of the victim and family from any form of intimidation or secondary victimisation
While we note that the accused has appeared in court, we emphasise that the matter is now before the judicial system and must be allowed to proceed fairly and without prejudice.
At the same time, this case highlights once again the deep crisis of gender-based violence in South Africa, where children continue to face unimaginable harm in spaces where they should be safe.
SAFTU stands in solidarity with the child, her family, and all survivors of abuse.
An injury to one is an injury to all.
