The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) condemns in the strongest possible terms the brutal killing of Mahikeng community activist Thato Molosankwe, who was reportedly shot multiple times at his home in Lomanyaneng.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, comrades, and the broader community of Mahikeng. No family should have to endure such a painful and traumatic loss.
Initial reports indicate that Comrade Molosankwe was widely known for his activism against crime, gender-based violence, corruption, and social decay affecting working class communities. His murder once again raises serious concerns about the levels of violence, lawlessness, and the vulnerability of activists and community leaders in South Africa.
SAFTU calls on the South African Police Service, the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, and all law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in pursuing those responsible for this killing. The perpetrators, organisers, and anyone who may have commissioned this murder must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
It is critically important that the full truth emerges, including the motive behind this assassination. South Africans are increasingly becoming concerned about the growing pattern where activists, whistleblowers, community organisers, and individuals who speak out against wrongdoing are silenced through violence.
The working class and poor communities already live under unbearable conditions of unemployment, poverty, crime, corruption, drugs, gender-based violence, and collapsing public services. Community activists often become the last line of defence where the state has failed. Their protection must become a national priority.
We urge anyone with information to cooperate with police so that justice can be served.
An injury to one is an injury to all.
A statement was issued on behalf of SAFTU by the General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi.
