SAFTU CONGRATULATES NAVI PILLAY AND CONDEMNS TRUMP’S ATTACK ON HER NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

The South African Federation of Trade Unions congratulates Judge Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on receiving the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Her recognition honours a lifetime of work defending human rights, pursuing justice and strengthening international law. It is a proud moment for South Africa and for all who believe that peace must be built on justice and accountability.

We condemn Donald Trump’s response. After the award was announced, he dismissed Pillay as someone “nobody” had heard of, called the decision disgraceful and complained that the prize should have gone to him.

This reaction reveals a disturbing sense of entitlement: when an independent committee honours someone else, Trump attacks the laureate, the committee and even the country where it is based. A Nobel Peace Prize is not a personal trophy to be claimed by a head of state. It recognises work judged to advance peace and international law.

Pillay’s record speaks for itself. She stood against apartheid and went on to serve in international courts and human rights institutions. Her achievement deserves respect, not the spiteful belittling of a leader who believes every honour should belong to him.

SAFTU celebrates Judge Pillay and her contribution to the struggle for justice. We hope her award strengthens the resolve of all those defending human rights, international law and accountability in a world where these principles face growing attacks.

A statement was issued on behalf of SAFTU by the General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi.
