The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) is deeply concerned by the continuing violence involving taxi associations in Cape Town. This conflict is costing lives, spreading fear and disrupting the livelihoods of workers and communities who depend on safe, reliable transport.
We call on all warring associations to stop the violence immediately. Disputes cannot be resolved through shootings, intimidation or threats. They must be resolved through dialogue and negotiation.
Peace must be negotiated around a table. SAFTU is ready to support efforts to bring the associations together and help facilitate a peaceful resolution. The SAFTU General Secretary and the UDM President have in the past mediated to help end violence. They could again be approached to assist in bringing the parties to the negotiating table.
We urge all associations to enter talks in good faith. We also call on the relevant authorities to support a peaceful process, protect the public and ensure that those responsible for violence are held accountable.
Workers, commuters, drivers and communities should not be made to pay the price for disputes between associations. The violence must end, and a lasting solution must be negotiated.
A statement was issued on behalf of SAFTU by the General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi.
