The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) mourns the passing of a football legend and former Bafana Bafana coach Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala.
Stanley Tshabalala, who was fondly called “Screamer” for his habit of always calling for the ball on the field, was a figure larger than life. Tshabalala’s presence on the field, the sidelines and soccer commentary was a testament to his love for the game and his desire to see it flourish in South Africa. He was not just a coach but a mentor and an inspiration for many young players. His commitment to nurturing young talent ensured that they received the guidance and support they needed to prosper.
SAFTU sends its deepest condolences to Tshabalala’s family during this difficult time. His passing is not just a loss to his family but a loss to the entire South African football community. We pay tribute to his legacy and celebrate the countless memories he created for South African football fans.
The fact that Screamer died from injuries he sustained in March 2024 from during a break-in into his house shine spotlight on the scourge of violence that has plagued our country. The widespread criminality and violence is taking more than 70 lives per day in this country. If not combatted, it robs us of legends and future icons in working class communities.
